HISTORY OF SCUNTHORPE BOXED UP AND HID AWAY

As the Chair of the Scunthorpe Charter Trustees and as a resident of the town I find it appalling that the pictures that were on display around the Council chamber have now been boxed and hid away including all the former Mayors of Scunthorpe, this just comes after the 75th anniversary of Scunthorpe getting its charter in 1936, this clearly has been done as Tory gerrymandering because of their dislike of the politics of Scunthorpe, especially when you find out that the Torys are looking to spend taxpayers money to put the former Mayors of Glanford on public display in the Angel in Brigg, talk about us and them and urban versus rural something I don’t believe in but clearly the Torys do as their believe is divide and rule,

Humber Bridge The Facts and a History Lesson for Mr Let’s Not Get Political

I’ve seen several tweets from the publicity seeking Tory South Bank MP on the Humber Bridge Tolls over the last couple of days and it’s time to set the record straight.

During my time as Leader of North Lincolnshire Council nobody can say I didn’t campaign long and hard, cross party and cross-bank on the Humber Bridge Tolls. I led a cross party delegation through the doors of Downing Street on the issue and pressured the Labour Government to take action.
I’ve seen talk of how that Government didn’t take action – not true. Sadiq Khan at the time the then Transport Minister took a momentous decision to go against a Public Inspector and refuse an increase to the toll. At the same time recognising the problems on the Humber Bridge Board, he gave them money to assist.

When the announcement was made a few months ago of a further breakthrough in the campaign and the intention to cut tolls to £1.50, I was delighted. At the same time I was very surprised to find out through the press. On speaking to Leaders of other Humber authorities it became obvious they too were in the dark. Surprising given the cross party, cross-bank working that had taken place to that point. I can only assume the intention of keeping the announcement a surprise was to gain political capital out of what until then had been a non-political, cross party issue. As I said at the time, the devil is always in the detail.

Despite all it’s talk of localism, the Tory Government seemed determined that an equal split of the liability for the Bridge across the Humber is not only fair but also a done deal. I received a letter from the Transport Secretary Justine Greening MP. In it she says,” the solution to the Humber’s problem laid within the Humber”. Given that the Leaders of the Humber councils appeared in the dark over this agreement, I would question the timing of the announcement.

Had I still been Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, I would have insisted that no announcements were made until the share of liability had been agreed. It’s said that I had previously agreed to an equal split of the debt; let me be clear about this, not only is that wide of the mark, it’s an outright lie. I challenge anybody to find any agreement from me on this.

I’ve always held the belief that the liability should be shared based on the population of the Humber. A view also held in North East Lincolnshire not just by the controlling Labour Group but also the opposition Conservatives. They consulted on the issue taking it to full council and securing cross-party support on that stance. We in North Lincs were never given that voice.

However, it seems the solution is at hand. Hull City Council have offered to take 100% of the liability and crucially still provide seats on the Bridge Board to all of the Humber Councils. Unlike the Tory MPs tweets on the issue, this is not a take over bid.

Hull to taking on 100% of the liability does seem strange at first but let’s look at it objectively. At the moment Hull residents are liable for 98% of £320m. Taking on 100% of the liability on £180m marks a better deal for Hull residents. It also removes liability for residents in North Lincolnshire and the East Riding. At the same time it provides seats on the board for all including North East Lincolnshire Council.

So, Hull, East Riding, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire residents win. At the same time central Government receives it’s guarantee and the toll is reduced to £1.50.

That offer is on the table from Hull, so why the delay? Why a continued negotiation over council’s taking a third of the liability? I don’t get it.
I say to Mr Let’s Not Get Political Percy, stop the politicking and the excuses and do what you said you would do – reduce the toll to £1.50.

Shame on Torys in North Lincs & East Riding Councils on Humber Bridge Tolls

Labour save the day. Hull City council secure a better deal for the residents of Hull by reducing it’s risk on the debt of the Humber bridge from Appox £320 million by taking 100% of the risk on the remaining £180 million, by doing this they have reduced the debt by £150 million meaning that the tolls will be reduced to £1.50 Well done Hull. This was down to Labour North East Lincs Councils stance surported by Labour North Lincs saying NO to taking on Tory controlled East Ridings Councils share of the dept risk, because they should really have taken 41% of the remaining 180m which they refused to do, this would have meant Hull would have only taken 24% North East lincs 17% leaving North Lincs taking 18% of the remaining debt risk, this is based fairley on per head of population in all four authorities, Neither Tory controlled East riding or North Lincs council would surport this, infact the Tory leader of North Lincs was prepared to take some of East Riddings share and almost doubling the debt risk to the Tax payers of North Lincs.I acused those Tory controlled North Lincs and Riding Councils of turning their backs on the Humber in not lifting a finger to help, Labour will still campaign for further reductions or toll abolishion.

THE CORRIDOR OF POWER AND SNEAKS and PORKY PIES

First it was the tory leader sneaking around the Labour group offices now it seems that some torys have taken to listening and loitering around the Labour group Leaders door, since we have been forced to move next to the torys, As I said before in all the years Labour was in control we gave the torys their privacy so that officers could be confident to brief them in a proper manner, also it would save officers having to give miss information to Labour Shadow cabinet members and then being seen running down the corridor after being SUMMONED (A word I hate to hear but the torys love it) at the time HE should have been briefing them.

FULL COUNCIL – TUESDAY 22 OCTOBER

Tuesday night was the second meeting of North Lincs council after the AGM of the council in May. This was followed on by an extraordinary meeting that the Labour group called well over three months ago regarding meals on wheels. To be honest it was a terrible meeting and the worst meeting that I have attended for a long time. I do not feel assured that the meals on wheels will not be totally out sourced to the private sector. The Labour group tried to seek assurance in an amendment to the Torys motion in which we moved that we improve greatly the meals on wheels service. The following was our amendment:

‘This council commits to providing and enabling excellent quality care for all residents throughout North Lincolnshire:

We seek to:

– improve greatly the meals on wheels service, by providing fresh food to all users.
– develop the meals on wheels service, whilst rejecting the wholesale privatisation of the provision.
– keep open and invest in the Lilacs and De Lacy House to support elderly residents.
– ensure that we work in partnership with all providers of care to all those with wide ranging needs and reward only those who provide excellent care for residents.

This coulcil reaffirms its commitment to look after all those residents that need care and also acknowledge the hard work of carers and commit to supporting the invaluable contribution, ensuring maximum choice for personalisation.’

Sadly all the Conservatives voted against this! I did feel that the tory Burton and Winterton ward councillors looked embarrassed – as they would not support our commitment to invest in De Lacy House

North Lincs TORYS want to buy Humber Bridge for 100 MILLION

Today I have Exposed that the torys want to buy the Humber bridge and all it liabilities for 100 million pounds putting a DEBT to every Man Woman and Child in North Lincs which would be 6,000 Pounds that would have to be found if the bridge was to go belly up, at first I did not believe the rumour and asked for a briefing from the Chief executive who confirmed it with me that he was himself was meeting with Civil Servants in London tomorrow to discuss the purchase useing tax payers money. I feel ashamed that at a time that we have been working with the 3 other Authorities to resolve this issue that North Lincs Torys is SNEAKING of to London behind our backs. What a waste of tax payers money at a time when the torys they are making cuts in vital front line services

BATHS HALL OPENING TODAY

After four years of working on delivering the Labour partys Baths hall project and nothing but total opposition and contempt from the torys, the hypocrites they are will unveil a plaque today,BUT Labour group members will be there to unveil a building, as I always asked for it should have the WOW factor and after getting a sneak pre-view on Friday it has, well done to the architect David Holt and project manager Nolan Bennett (both I am proud to say are north lincolnshire council officers)Thanks should also go to Clugstons construction who have delivered a venue for the people of north lincs and lastly to SMG the operators who are to bring local and national talent to it.
